Montepulciano, of Etruscan origin and a free commune since the 13th century, was for a long time contested between Siena and Florence, and is known as the "Pearl of the 16th century" because of its works by famous renaissance artists such as Vignola, Antonio da Sangallo il Vecchio and Baldassare Peruzzi. The recently restored town museum, to re-open in spring 1999, will have an Etruscan section as well as the permanent collection of Sienese painters and works by Della Robbia. Every summer the "Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte", now in its 23rd year, is held in Montepulciano. It was first started by the musician W.Henze and creates considerable interest in international cultural circles, attracting hundreds of artists every year from all over the world. Other important events take place in August: the "Bruscello", a folkloristic performance dating back to medieval times; the Interprovincial Exhibition of arts and crafts in the fortress, where Tuscan artisans display their work; the "Bravio delle Botti", a race in which the competing "contrade" (town districts) push a barrel up the steep streets of the town. Of equal importance to the artistic, architectural and natural heritage of the town are Montepulciano's wines, which have achieved premium status: the Rosso DOC, and above all Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, the first Italian wine to be granted the DOCG. |
